Protect yourself against Email Spoofing

Email authenticity is a major concern for a lot of customers and one of the best ways of addressing this is by adding SPF and DKIM Records. Both these techniques can be used to prevent email spoofing.

So what are SPF and DKIM Records?

SPF stands for Sender Policy Framework and is an open standard to prevent sender address forgery. The way it works is that it stops email forgers from forging the sender address in an email. It does this by authorizing addresses that can send email for a particular Domain Name. You can get a little more info on SPF here.

Similarly, DKIM i.e. Domain Keys Identification Mail is another mechanism used to fight email forgery. It uses encryption technology to verify the authenticity of the sender address. If a message has been verified through Domain Keys, you’ll see a small icon of an envelope and key in the email header. Read more about DKIM here.

Adding these Records:

No changes will be required if you’re using our DNS Services.

However, in case you’re not using our DNS services, you will need to add certain TXT Records in the package being used. These can be viewed under Nameserver Details in the Order Details View of your Email Package.

Recent Industry-wide Hacks and Malware Attacks

There has been a Linux Platform hack gathering speed in the last few weeks which has already affected a couple of reputed Web Hosting companies in the industry. While there is no clarity on the exact method of the attacks, they seem to be targeting various plugins that might be part of the applications running on your Customers’ websites.

Much like the Gumblar attacks around the same time last year, we suggest that you keep the Web Applications running on the websites up to date. This includes WordPress installations, or any other CMS which needs regular updates.

Here are a few things that you can keep in mind:

  • Always keep strong FTP Passwords (changing these from time to time is a good practice)
  • Scan your local system with a good AntiVirus and Malware remover to make sure the system is infection free (Especially the machine used to upload data)
  • Avoid 777 permissions on any file or folder
  • Using SFTP will also help in preventing these infections

On our part, you can rest assured that we are taking all measures possible to avoid any such hack on our servers. We have various security mechanisms in place that block these malicious actions from taking shape and we have also implemented various automated and periodic scans which identify any such patterns and cut them out from the root.

Fortunately, we do not have any instances of such an attack on our servers yet. While we are doing everything we can to safeguard you from such an attack, we will need you to be vigilant and proactive in taking all precautionary measures.

System Unavailability Notice

Digital Certificate Maintenance Notice

Due to the following maintenance announced by thawte, the Indi Domains Digital Certificate Product would be offline as well:

Duration: 6 hours

Affected Systems: Digital Certificate Enroll, Reissue, Renew, Management on our Live servers.

This outage shall have no impact on the working of your already issued digital certificates.

.CO Landrush Pre-Registrations

.CO Landrush Pre-Registrations are now live!

Launch Details:

  • Pre-Registrations for the .CO Landrush will be available from the
    15th of June, 2010    .
  • The .CO Landrush begins on the 21st of June, 2010.
  • The Cost for a Pre-Registration will be: $Rs. 12,495/- – including an
    Rs. 400/- non-refundable application fee.
  • If there are multiple applicants for a particular Domain, an auction will be
    held between the applicants by the Registry/Auction House after the Landrush.
  • Important: If the outcome of the auction process is not
    in you favor, Rs. 12,495/- will be refunded to you. The difference will displayed to you as the non-refundable application fee.
  • All refunds will be processed once the auction is completed.

New .COM & .NET Prices post 30th June

To accommodate the Registry price hike that was announced last year, will be increasing our prices for .COM and .NET Domains from the 30th of June, 2010.

The new prices for .COM and .NET will be Rs 525/-.

Important:

  • These prices will be applicable from the 30th of June, 2010.
  • The prices mentioned will be applicable on .COM and .NET Domains only. The prices for .BIZ, .INFO, .ORG and .NAME Domains will not be modified.
  • These prices are applicable to all years of Registration, Renewal and Transfer-in.

Opening Ports on our Web Hosting Servers

At Indi Domains, we constantly strive to improve our platform and make it as secure and safe as possible. As part of the several precautions taken in the past, we had blocked some ports on our servers to mitigate the risks of malicious server hacks being attempted from around the world.

As part of our initiative to provide you with state-of-the-art Hosting infrastructure, we have taken several steps over the years to strengthen our Hosting Environment through constant Hardware and Software upgrades. Thanks to the improved level of security these initiatives have helped achieve, we believe now is the right time to open access to various ports which you could use for your Hosting applications. Here is the list of the Ports that can now be accessed by you:

Linux Hosting
Port: 43, 80, 100, 143, 443, 1433, 2266, 2267, 3306, 5432, 7070, 8080, 25432

Windows Hosting
Port: 25, 20, 21, 443, 80, 1433

We decided to make these changes after several of you had requested greater access to Ports on our Hosting platform. This reaffirms our belief that your feedback is an essential ingredient for our success and hence will continue to prioritize your requests in every business decision.

In the future, we would love to provide greater freedom and access to our system and hence keenly look forward to all feedback received from you in this regard. New .CN Registrations are Temporarily Unavailable

As announced earlier, the .CN Registry has made changes to its Domain Name Policy regarding the registration of new .CN Domain Names.

As a result, we have been forced to place .CN Registrations on DNO (Do Not Order) which means you will be unable to Register new .CN Domains for the time being. Registrations will be unavailable till the Registry clarifies its policies and we are able to sufficiently analyze and deploy the new requirements as mandated by them. We expect this to take anywhere between 2 – 4 weeks.

Additionally, we are contacting the .CN Registry along with our fellow Registrars to seek clarification on policy changes and to ensure that future changes are made keeping your best interests in mind.

Rest assured, we are striving to make .CN Registrations available as soon as possible. In the meanwhile, if you have any questions or require any clarifications, feel free to contact us.

Free Mail Forwarding From This Sunday!

On the 6th of September, we will introduce Free Mail Forwarding with every Domain registered through Indi Domains! Mail Forwarding will be added to our already irresistable Free Services suite that includes services like DNS, Domain Forwarding and Privacy Protection. We hope that this great new service translates into an even more compelling offering with huge profits for you.

Control Panel Changes

Mail Forwarding Sign-up and Setup:

  • All accounts on the system will be signed up for the Free Mail Forwarding Service on the 6th of September
  • All Customer  sign-ups post 6th September will be automatically signed up for this service
  • As Mail Forwarding will become a Free Service, the Pricing page will be deprecated from the Control Panel
  • The Mail Forwarding Service will now be moved to the .PW infrastructure
  • Post 6th September, the Mail Hosting and Mail Forwarding tabs will no longer be seen in the Control Panel. Instead, it will be consolidated in to a single tab called Email. On clicking on the Email tab, you will be given the option of either purchasing Mail Hosting or activating Mail Forwarding

Activating Free Mail Forwarding:

In order to activate the Free Mail Forwarding Service, you will need to:

  • Navigate to the associated Product Management Console
  • Click on the Email button
  • Click on the Activate Mail Forwarding button
  • Once successfully activated, the Activate Mail Forwarding button will be replaced by a Manage Mail Forwarding button

Nameserver Information:

  1. If the Domain Name using the service is registered through Indi Domains, but the nameservers are not the same as those required, our system will prompt the you by displaying an Auto Update Nameservers button. On clicking this button, the nameservers will be updated automatically
  2. If the Domain Name is not registered with us, the required nameservers will be displayed to you. The auto-update option will not be available

Impact on Existing Orders:

  1. Wildcarded forwarding will no longer be available with the Free Mail Forwarding Service. However, you can create a Catch-All account using the Free Service
  2. If the Mail Forwarding order is associated with one or more Products in the system, you will simply need to search for the Product associated with the Mail Forwarding Service and access the management console from the Email button. Alternatively, you can use the widget on the Control Panel homepage to locate the Mail Forwarding Service
  3. If the Mail Forwarding order is not associated with any other Product in the system, you can use the Manage Free Services widget on the Control Panel homepage to locate the Mail Forwarding Service
